John Sterling, Longtime Yankees Radio Voice, Retires

Yankees' Iconic Broadcaster Hangs Up the Microphone

Legendary Play-by-Play Announcer Calls Last Game

John Sterling, the iconic radio play-by-play announcer for the New York Yankees for over three decades, has announced his retirement. The 85-year-old broadcaster has called countless memorable games for the Bronx Bombers, including the team's recent World Series victories in 2009 and 2017.

Sterling began his broadcasting career in the early 1960s, working for various radio and television stations in the Baltimore-Washington area. He joined the Yankees in 1989 and quickly became a fan favorite for his enthusiastic and knowledgeable commentary. Sterling's signature home run call, "It is high! It is far! It is gone!" has become synonymous with the Yankees and has been heard by millions of fans over the years.

The Yankees offered Sterling a chance to continue working in a reduced role, but it appears that he has decided to step away from broadcasting entirely. Sterling's retirement marks the end of an era for the Yankees, as he has been the voice of the team for so many generations of fans.

In a recent interview with the New York Post, Sterling reflected on his career and said, "I've had the best seat in the house for some of the greatest moments in Yankees history. It's been an incredible privilege to be a part of this organization and I will cherish the memories forever."
